Choosing the right hockey helmet
Every hockey helmet sold in Canada must meet CSA certification standards. Beyond certification, the most important factor is fit — a helmet should sit level on your head with about one finger-width above your eyebrows. Most helmets are adjustable, but the shell size (S, M, L, XL) needs to match your head circumference.
Helmet sizing tips
Measure around the widest part of your head, about one inch above your eyebrows. Youth helmets typically fit 19-21 inches, Junior 20-22 inches, and Senior 21-24+ inches. Many models offer tool-free adjustment for a custom fit. Always try a helmet on with your cage or visor attached.
When to replace your hockey helmet
Most manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 5-7 years, or immediately after a significant impact. Look for cracks, loose padding, or a degraded liner as signs it's time for a new one. Buying last year's model on sale is a great way to get top-tier protection at a lower cost.
